Week Module Learning Objectives
1 Information Technology
  • Introduction to interoperability and why IIS need standards
  • Dive into an introduction to digital data, binary numbers, hex numbers, and how text is represented with American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
2 Networks and Connections
  • Learn how computers connect with each other across networks; how a connection is only an illusion; the difference between synchronous and asynchronous behavior, client, and server; and how addressability impacts connections
  • Explain how an untrusted network can be reliable and how packets of data are addressed for transport
3 Transport and Files
  • Introduction to different transport technologies used for HL7 data and IIS interfaces
  • Quick review of basic computer concepts and skills useful for supporting interoperability
4 Hashing, Encryption, and Troubleshooting
  • Learn about technologies that secure our data, starting with hashing technologies and finishing with encryption
  • You will learn enough to be able to talk sensibly about private/public keys and certificates
5 Keys, Certificates, and Security
  • Learn strategies on how to troubleshoot problems and properly engage with security threats
 6 Course Wrap Up
  • Review all topics learned in this course plus a final challenge in Menti

Course Format

Successful completion of this course is dependent on viewing the weekly pre-recorded videos, completing the weekly homework assignments, and participating in the live quizzes and Slack channel.

Individual work

  • Watch all weekly pre-recorded videos prior to the live Wednesday session
  • Complete and submit homework assignment by the end of the day on Tuesdays
  • Review additional learning materials each week

Quizzes

  • Quizzes will be conducted via Menti during the live session
  • Quizzes will help assess and solidify course materials
  • Quizzes are not graded and are anonymous

Slack channel

  • You will be invited to a Slack channel where you can engage in conversation and ask questions throughout the course
  • There will be weekly office hours where you can ask questions prior to the weekly homework due date

Attendance

  • You will gain the most possible from this course by attending at least five of the six live sessions
  • Please inform the course coordinator if you are not able to attend a live session

Course participation

  • Participate in Zoom session exercises
  • Ask questions and share experiences on Slack channel

Course completion certificate

A completion certificate will be provided to all participants who attend at least five live sessions (course coordinators must be notified of absences) and who complete all weekly homework assignments on time.

An anonymous evaluation will be administered at the conclusion of this course. We welcome your feedback anytime during the course as well.
