FAQ

What is AIRA?

AIRA is a membership organization that exists to promote the development and implementation of immunization information systems (IIS) as important tools in preventing and controlling vaccine-preventable diseases. AIRA values the voluntary and collaborative interaction of all its members. For more information, read the AIRA 101 One-Sheet.

What is an IIS?

Immunization information systems (IIS), also known as immunization registries, are confidential, population-based, computerized databases that record all immunization doses administered by participating providers to persons residing within a given geopolitical area. At the point of clinical care, IIS provide a consolidated record of administered vaccines as well as clinical decision support that helps providers determine which vaccines are due based on the patient’s age, health status, and immunization history. At the population level, aggregated IIS data can be used to assess vaccination coverage, identify gaps, target outreach efforts, and respond to vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks. For more information about IIS, read the IIS 101 One-Sheet and visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

How does AIRA serve the IIS community?

AIRA provides a forum through which members combine efforts, share knowledge, and promote activities to advance IIS and immunization programs. A strong, unified voice for standards, policy, and funding, AIRA is a resource for data exchange standards development, information sharing, and education/training for IIS managers and staff.

Who are AIRA’s members?
