Over the past two months, we’ve shared brief updates during AIRA’s Standards & Interoperability Steering Committee (SISC) and Member & Partner calls about this work. We’re excited to now welcome the broader community and share a little more about what’s coming.

What AIRA is developing
To support implementation of the professional societies' fall respiratory vaccine recommendations, AIRA is developing Clinical Decision Support (CDS) resources. These resources will build upon the CDC's CDSi framework that the immunization community has relied on for many years, translating the recommendations into structured information that IIS and other health information systems can use to support consistent clinical decision making. Our first priority is Supporting Data for influenza, RSV, and COVID-19.

When will the resources be available?
Professional societies are expected to complete publication of their influenza, RSV, and COVID-19 recommendations in early September. AIRA plans to make its fall respiratory CDS resources available in mid-September, as soon as possible after the recommendations needed to complete the work have been published.

We recognize how important timely CDS resources are to IIS, implementers, and their partners as they prepare for the respiratory season, and our team is working now so that we can move quickly once the final recommendations are available.

Stay informed
Because this is a new effort—and because the recommendations and resources will continue to evolve—we encourage anyone who uses or implements immunization clinical decision support to sign up for updates. We’ll use these updates to let you know when new resources are available and to share important changes as they occur.

On August 25, AIRA Diamond Corporate Partner Sanofi hosted a special webinar featuring AIRA’s 2026 National Meeting keynote speakers, Dr. Todd Wolynn and Dr. Chad Hermann. The webinar provided an excellent opportunity for those who were unable to attend the National Meeting to hear their message, as well as for those who wanted to revisit their presentation and walk away with new insights.

Drawing on their combined expertise in pediatrics, public health, and strategic communications, Dr. Wolynn and Dr. Hermann explored the value of effective communication and shared seven keys to becoming a more impactful communicator. This timely and relevant presentation offers practical, actionable insights that you can put to work right away.

In partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), AIRA brought together six IIS jurisdictions—Louisiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Philadelphia, Texas, and Utah—for the DAR by EHR Learning Collaborative, an applied project using the Measurement and Improvement (M&I) DAR framework to better understand how EHR products and implementation practices influence IIS data quality. Together, participants explored DAR results through an EHR lens, focusing on three measures: mother’s maiden name, patient phone number, and patient email address. By examining patterns across EHR products and digging into potential contributing factors, the collaborative helped jurisdictions move beyond identifying where data quality issues exist toward understanding why they may be occurring and what they can do next.

The project generated several practical resources that are now available for the broader IIS community:

• DAR by EHR Workbook – Helps jurisdictions organize and analyze DAR results by EHR product to identify patterns and prioritize opportunities for improvement
• Provider & EHR Grouping User Guide – Provides step-by-step guidance for preparing and grouping IIS data for EHR-level analysis
• Root Cause Analysis (RCA) Guide – Introduces approachable RCA methods and tools IIS teams can use to investigate contributing factors and translate findings into action

The collaborative reinforced an important takeaway that data quality improvement is rarely just a data problem. EHR configuration, provider workflows, implementation practices, and relationships among IIS, providers, and EHR partners can all influence what ultimately reaches the IIS.

Thank you to our participating jurisdictions for bringing their data, experience, questions, and ideas to the table. Their contributions helped turn the lessons from this collaborative into resources the entire IIS community can use!

AIRA offers no-cost responsive technical assistance to help jurisdictions interpret DAR by EHR results, explore contributing factors and root causes, develop actionable quality improvement strategies, connect with EHR and jurisdiction partners, and identify relevant AIRA, CDC, and community resources. Immunization information systems (IIS) do more than store vaccination records. They help strengthen public health by supporting vaccine inventory management, helping providers identify vaccination needs through
clinical decision support (CDS), and providing critical information during outbreak response.

As cybersecurity continues to evolve, so do the challenges facing immunization information systems (IIS). AIRA, in collaboration with CDC, is preparing to release the 2026 Security Guidance for IIS, a new resource that complements the 2017 Security Guidance Considerations for Immunization Information Systems.

The new guidance offers practical considerations to help IIS programs navigate today's cybersecurity environment. It will help organizations make informed cybersecurity decisions by fostering collaboration while emphasizing that protecting IIS infrastructure and data is a shared responsibility.
